I apply this term to smaller trumpets worn all the time rather than being held to the ear.

Some came with a headband, others clipped to the ear.

Rein offered a version which could be hidden in a ladies hair.

My granny wore these and was very frightening to a six year old. Noone told me that she removed them to sleep !
